The Artist, Silvie Sturm-Meyer

Silvie Sturm-Meyer is a self-taught wood sculpture artist located in Wisconsin. Born and raised in Europe (former Czechoslovakia). Meyer has a deep connection to nature and transforms sustainably-sourced wood pieces - planks/bark/roots/logs into one-of-a-kind fine art for nature-lovers.
The carvings use an arsenal of power carving, sanding tools, hand tools, burners and torches (for shou sugi ban technique and pyrography) and hand-brushed paint and stain to bring the carvings alive with eye-catching color, contrast, and detail.
Meyer’s art carvings often feature nature reflections. Customers love the tactile side of Silvie’s art, you can enjoy the 3D art using more senses and touch is a powerful one.
Meyer conected her woodcarving passion and painting and she absolutely loves it. So much to learn, so much to discover! Every single piece of wood has a story to tell and Silvie is trying to add to that story another layer – using wood as canvas. Many of Meyer‘s creations are on reclaimed wood – breathing a new life and purpose to it.

What did Meyer get into woodworking?
And what inspires her creations?
Art was always an important part of my life, creating (although painfull sometimes) brings joy and fulfilment to me. Throughout life I „played“ with different forms of art from painting to theater and literature.
My art background started in painting and drawing before adventuring down the path of wood carving. Wood working/carving developed as a self-taught art form through experimentation, trial and error, research, creative courage, artistic risks, and a never-ending curiosity to try new things.
In my younger years, I was blessed to experiment with color and different painting mediums and techniques at art school in former comunist Czechoslovakia. I layed hands on many different kinds of materials. Glass painting was one of my favorites back in time, but since I was a child, being a tree lover, I found myself in medium of wood. Wood resonates with my senses and emotions. The smell, the touch, the looks - wood is BEAUTIFUL! 15 years ago, wood gained total dominance. Almost every single hour of free time was/is dedicated to carving or building from wood.“
Carving is my way to process and heal from past traumas, and embrace a deeply therapeutic connection to nature. I view the carving process as a powerful co-creation between myself (the artist) and the legacy of the tree by embracing its natural character, its symbolic cracks, and knots of personality which guide and enhance the artistic design.
My inspiration comes from nature, where we can see the evidence of the work of the greatest creator of all – God. I’m grateful to be able to create and to continue living an outdoor lifestyle that often brings me to my favorite place – the forest. From close encounters with wild animals, appreciating the elements of nature, soaking in the solitude and silence while sitting and observing… these are the key forces that authentically inspire my art. Grateful to God and love of my life, my husband who is with Him now that they are giving me strength and love to create.
